What are the royalties on items bearing Harvard's trademarks ordered internally by Harvard schools, departments, units, and student groups?

Orders for Harvard insignia products (SWAG) by University schools, departments, units, and officially recognized Harvard student organizations are only charged a nominal royalty rate of 4% of net (on the price charged by the licensed vendor for the items) instead of the normal 10% of net as long as the items are produced in limited amounts and intended for internal use, specific events, or gifts.  The licensed vendor pays the 4% royalties to the Trademark Program.

Harvard insignia items produced for sale to the public:

  • are charged the normal royalty rate of 10% of net (paid by the licensed vendor)
  • are only allowed on a limited basis
  • may not be sold through a retailer, the Internet, or any other commercial venue
  • can only be sold either directly to the public or through a licensed company’s website
  • can only be sold for a limited period.

Proceeds may only be used for fundraising purposes to benefit the Harvard school, department, unit or student group selling the items.
